Question Rattling Window

The window next to my bed rattles very easily. Anything from an airplane passing overhead to the nextdoor neighbor sneezing causes it to rattle and wakes me up on a nightly basis. The window slides sideways and has a metal frame. Is there any way I could stop the window from rattling, while still being able to open and close it?

warn out weatherstripping can cause it to rattle. I'd check that first.

How old is the window? Glasman is assuming that it is new enough to HAVE weatherstripping. None of the old (circa 1956) windows I pulled out of my house had any, and they rattled to beat the band! Problem was that the glass was no longer sealed to the aluminum frames. One solution for me was to remove the glas and re-silicon it to the frame. I opted for the better route -- replace the windows and cut my heating and cooling bills by 1/3!!

The house was made in the 1970s, so I think the windows are also that old. The windows do have weatherstripping on them, but they are worn down, so I'm replacing that. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for your help.

1970's windows are antiques in the world of windows. Weatherstripping MAY get rid of the rattles, but certainly won't do much for your utility bills. You are still stuck with clear glass. It MAY be dbl. pane, but it's still CLEAR!!)

New (or retrofit) windows ARE a big investment. But if that investment will cut your heating and/or cooling costs by 1/3 to 1/2, it may be worth looking into. Guaranteed the noise level will come down! (Like my Dad said, he can't believe how much QUIETER his house was after I replaced his windows and left!!)

Check with your local utility -- there may be rebates or other incentives that they offer if you upgrade your windows. (As if cutting your utility bill by 1/3 isn't ENOUGH of an incentive??)

Look into it!!
