confusing door lingo

Well, I have a problem with my bedroom door. It wont shut! Not even a little. I don't know all the fancy lingo so what I have read so far does not help. It latches on the left side and swings away from me when inside my room....not sure if that even matters. It may be caused by settling, but it's not my house so I can't do anything about that. The gap on the top part of the door is about a half inch the whole way. It is getting hung up on the bottom of the left side. The paint is all gone on that part. When I actually look at the door to see where it is hitting, it looks like the whole left side, and not one section over another. The door is really squeaky too. Whatever, it's just an all around screwed up door......Please help.

First off, if this isn't your house, you should get the ok to even work on it.
If you work on it before asking, the owner could say you caused it and make you pay for any labor cost.

Have the people you rent this from look at it first, if they want to make a deal with you ( ie. rent reduction for you working on the door ) then come back. Your time is money to, so any deal you strike with the owners should include material and cost of your labor.

I agree with glasman on asking the landlord first. You could try opening the door and looking at the hinges to see if they are loose. Wiggle the door while it is open and see if the hinges move where they are attached to the frame and on the door itself. Good luck.

It's my dad's house and I am fixing a whole bunch of stuff for him, or just at least getting info. We don't want any huge projects because a remodel may be coming. Basically, quick fixes is what I need at the moment.

Try the screw hinges first then. Get at least one 3" long screw for each hinge and get them all tight. If that doesn't work something's off in the door frame. Big job to fix right.
