Installing a Patio Door

I recently purchased a sliding patio door from a home improvement store. The charge for installation was initially $400. When they came out to do a measurement they told me they had to open the frame up a little to fit the "standard" sized door. The installation is now $635. Do you think I am getting taken for a ride or is this not a bad deal. What should I do next?

hi, is this "standard" sized patio door replaceing the original "standard" size door or is it a new construction project. Did you frame the rough opening yourself? Was it done by a contractor? You may have a couple options. If the framing is already exposed the studs can easily be pushed back some with the help of a reciprocating saw to cut the top and bottom nails. You can do the same if the exterior plywood is also attached to the studs. Then renailed at the proper rough opening and you are good to go. With what you are paying for the installation I would like to see you get a few basic tools instead and with a friend this can be a nice DIY project and you will enjoy those doors so much more !
