Install Antique Double French Doors
I have a home built in the late 1930's.
Most of the doors were removed; for example, the dining room french doors that opened to the Living room were removed, a set of doors from the front bedroom to the sunroom were removed, the door leading to the upstairs and Double French Doors that separted the Dining Room from the outside patio, which is the opening that I want retored with French Doors.
I measured the opening a few years ago, I don't recall the size, but it was not standard.
So, my choice was to purchase Pre-hung doors and re-do the opening OR order custom doors.
So, I fond a place that sells old house stuff; items that were removed from old homes.
I discovered a set of french doors that were almost the correct size. I bought them, along woth the original hardware, but I have never hung them. I have had the doors for a few years.
I have to cut off about an inch in width from each door. I will make the cut on the hinge side since I do not want to mess with the area of the door that will hold the old door latching mechanism.
My question is this:
How much extra to I cut off of each door to allow for hanging them in a double opening?
Any other advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

hi
removing from the hinge side makes sence but not to much you will weaken the frame. 1 inches on each door seem to be alot.
you will need propably a T molding to be place between the doors where the meet together to hide the opening.
Try to make the cut even on each doors.
Have you tried replacing the frame there might be more space between the old door frame and the studs. I might be a good ideal to replace the frame and not cut so much of the doors.
hope this helps

hi
I did some renovation in old houses sometime the walls where 14 in thick.
I'm sure if you remove the casing around the doors on both side you should be able to used a reciprical saw to cut it out.
Remember: They built it it can be remove i always say.
time and patient is what counts.
Or just put a curtain rod and drapes lol lol
cheers
