Red face replace metal windows in brick house!

Does anyone have any advice for replaceing metal windows in a brick house? The windows are metal frames, single pane, and the sill is about six inches wide.
I plan on doing this myself, one at a time. So, I would like to gather all of the info I can get.
Thanks in advice for any help.

Respectfully,
Reggie

Cool

Dear Reggie.

I'm guessing that you have a type of window similar to the Kradco aluminum combination window. Generally, these windows are single pane, and slide from side to side. They have a stationary glass which is glazed in place, and then sliding windows to the side. Then an additional sliding window serves as a "storm window" on the inside. It is almost like 2 sets of windows in one opening. Women love them.

These are a giant pain to get out of brick houses. The best thing to do is: first, remove all the window sashes that are removable. then, try to remove the glass panel that is glazed in place. There are rubber strips inside that can be removed, and a bent pizza cutter may help you to "roll around" the edges and loosen the glazing. Sometimes they will come out, sometimes they are cemented in permanently. Maybe you will be lucky. If not, get a glass cutter and break out the glass, being careful to put drop cloths inside and out. A plastic curtain inside will keep glass from flying where you don't want it to.

Once the glass is removed, cut the mullion out with a reciprocating saw. Then, you need to cut the nails off of the nailing fin. Insert the reciprocating saw blade inbetween the wood window jamb and the aluminum "storm window" and cut all the way around the window. then collapse the window in on itself. Be prepared to have hot bits of metal go down your shirt. this is my least favorite window extraction.

Good luck, you'll need it.

How about if the windows are single hung aluminum (same brick house)? Is it still basically the same process?

Thanks,

Yes. The stationary glass is almost impossible to get out without breaking it. If it isn't cooperating, I will take a glass cutter and score the glass into pieces, then break them out one by one. (be sure you tape cardboard to the inside to keep glass from flying into the house, and put a drop cloth on the ground to catch shards of glass. Then cut the mullion out, as described in the previous message.
