using non pre-hung doors
#1

I'm adding doors in a room in the basement. These are not pre-hung doors. I need to know how to case in these doors. I made my rough opening two inches wider than the doors. How do I go about building the frames so I can hang the doors.

Go to HD, Lowes, or any lumberyard and get door jambs that are the width you need (4-5/8" for 2X4 walls, 6-5/8" for 2X6 walls). Several styles available. Some have the door stop shaped into the jamb, in which case you need a left leg, a right leg, and the header. Some have nail-on door stops -- there is no side difference in the legs.
Then you need to mortise the hinges in both the jamb and the door so that they hinges will line up EXACTLY. (A router and a jig work well.) Hang the door, then bore the holes for the lockset, and mortise in the strike plate.
(Why not pre-hung doors?? They sure are a lot simpler and faster!!)
