French Doors W/ Blinds, Anyone Have Any Experience?
Just got back from Home Depot, wanted to get a quote on a 6 foot french door (or Patio swing) with blinds inside the glass. Cuz we have little ones that LOVE to tough everything. In our last house he pulled down 6 blinds, became rather costly. But back to the door, Home depot says they dont even sell ANY doors with blinds in them because they break, and cost 3/4 of price of door to fix or replace. Lowes sells lots of these doors tho, no one there had anything bad to say. Does anyone have any experice with these type doors with the blinds? They seem to be ideal for our new family room we are going to start soon. But dont want to run into problems. ANY advice or help is much appreciated ! You can email me at Frank.koempel@verizon.net if you have the time.
thanks

If your kids enjoy destroying your blinds, then having blinds inside the glass is a great idea. We are installers for Pella windows and doors, and I've installed many french doors with slimshades. (they come installed on the inside of the removable storm panel) The handle that operates the blinds is up high where only an adult can reach it. If there is a problem with them, Pella will stand behind it, provided you've filled out your warantee card properly, and have had it installed properly.
Most people I know never raise and lower their blinds, and only tilt the blinds up and down to let in, or keep out direct sunlight. If this is the case, I'm certain they will last for years and years. If you enjoy playing with the blinds, raising them up and down several times a day, well, then it only stands to reason that you will wear them out eventually.

Home Depot certainly DOES sell these doors. I bought one last year ($499, but they've since went up to $529), I see them regularlly listed in their weekly sales papers.
Like Sleeper said, I never really raise/lower them, just tilt, but they are protected, and never need dusting.

I install doors for Lowes. We sell these doors. They are the #1 seller.I have some in my house also. The "blinds in between the glass" is the only way to go on french doors.I have never had a problem or had to make repairs on them.If there were ever a problem, the screws come off from around the inside trim and could easily be replaced. All doors at the home centers carry limited lifetime warranties.

French Doors w/blinds will break
We had french doors with built in blinds put in our new house. The house was dried in but no heat or air. The outside pane of glass on both doors shattered. One door did not have a mark on it and the other had a small hole in it with the glass pushed outward slightly.Has anyone had a problem like this or can tell me why this happened? Thanks

Sure, its probably vandalism. The glass in those doors is tempered, and it's *very* hard to break. Believe me, I've tried to break plenty of them so they fit in our dumpster. Since both doors broke, and no one was living there, I'd say it was a bad neighborhood kid with a BB gun practicing to be a gangsta someday.
