Sliding glass door handle/latch replacement question:
I have a very old sliding glass door from the 70's that has a broken latch/handle mechanism. I found the exact replacement handle here:

I would like to update the style to something more modern. Am I stuck with this style latch? The only thing I can think of is to buy the latch, cut off the "retro" part of the handle and buy a set of handles like this to attach around the mechanism.
I'd like to do this as easily as possible and not have to do too much cutting but it seems as though the only option is to use the original style latch.

I was over to Home Depot and they only have the latches for the "thick" frame. I haven't been to Lowes yet but I'm not going to get my hopes up - this seems to be a somewhat non-standard frame size. I've personally only seen this latch a handful of times and I suppose the fact that only one online store has an exact replacement supports its rarity.

Consider youself lucky that you were able to find the exact replacement. Forget about HD & Lowes for these type parts. Your 1970 door is not energy efficient, you'll probably should be replacing it soon.

Believe me, I want to - especially since the track and wheels are in seriously bad shape. We are considering a pre-hung french door but it's sort of last on the list in comparison to the rest of the house. I just want to 'make it work' for another few months.
