Want to be sure I'm not being taken, I can cancel...
Hope this is the right place to post this.
I was just quoted by a company to install 16 new windows in our home, and a big slider door to our backyard. I won't name the company, but I know it was "in cooperation" with the Gas Co. Some of our windows are big, average of about 58 " across. A couple windows they considered "one," they said woudl be considered 3 by others. They are the X O X style windows.
The first price I was quoted almost made me laugh. However, I have no idea about windows, NONE. I know it's expensive, but I just had no idea.
The window mfg, or style, is SOMERTON II by Certain Teed. Nice windows, Vinyl, and with LIFETIME WARRANTY. If I take a baseball bat and bust one, I can get a new one free of charge.
Okay.... the first thing I was told, $1200 per window. I about died.
After some negotiating, was told I could do $700, and that's with me having a sign in my front yard for them for a month, (a sales tool I'm sure) and another 10% off for deciding now. (another ploy)
Anyways, considering I knocked off $500 per window, am I still getting robbed here? I've never been quoted on windows before, and according to these guys, this is the "cadillac" of windows.
I have 3 days to cancel, and thought I'd start here for any feedback.
I appreciate it.

A Somerton II brochure can be seen at: http://www.certainteed.com/NR/rdonly...IIBrochure.pdf
I've had dealings with Certainteed windows just once, and have seen them since at Remodelling shows. In my opinion they are a middle of the road window, but not a cadillac by any means. However, an average of $700 a window installed sounds very reasonable, especially since you have several XOX and OX configurations.
A couple questions I would have: Does this price include all installation expenses, such as exterior trim and cladding, and interior trim as well? Will you be getting new interior trim, or do they plan on just making a single trim piece to cover the window edge? Will you have to do any painting or staining?
Also, regarding the quality of the window, are you getting clear glass (the standard double-pane) or the high performance glass (Thermaflect w/ argon)? I hope they quoted you for Thermaflect! If they never mentioned it, I bet what they did was knocked off the Thermaflect to reduce the price.

I REALLY appreciate that feedback.
I know the price includes all the installation, but I'm pretty sure it's where they just are doing the single trim piece. They said I'd have to do no painting or staining, that they would do everything.
I was initially quoted the Thermaflect/Aragon window. It was not mentioned that they were changing the window when I got them down to $700, so I'm assuming it still is. I'll verify.
So, in your opinion, $700 is fair, and even if this isn't the "cadillac" of windows, I'm assuming it's still a very good window, will definately improve the value of my home, cut heating costs, all that stuff, (we have the originals on our home, they're awful) and is worth the money? (we're still talking a 13k investment here!)
Oh, and the lifetime warranty? That sounded like a pretty good deal too.
I'm almost upset that they even STARTED at 1200 per, considering that includced having a sign in my yard, and the 10% discount with the Gas Co.
They said they sell them all day at $1500 per! That's just obscene!

Yes, with the Thermaflect w/ argon I'd say that's a pretty fair deal. You might ask for references and go visit a job where they installed a similar window and see how it turned out.
Even the best window could be screwed up if it was installed by a crew of idiots. Checking their work out in person is a good idea.

Thanks so much for the feedback.
The lifetime guarantee on it makes me feel like that even if they screw it up, I can call and get it redone. However, I will ask for some references.
I feel better about this now. I can't imagine how some people, (rich I suppose) will say, "sure, $1200 per window, go for it."
Anyways, again, thanks, you eased my mind.
