You have 3 options:

1). Use a skilsaw to cut off 1 1/2" of siding all the way around the window in order to expose the nailing fin.

2). Remove the woodbuck jamb from the interior (provided this is the style of aluminum windows you have), leaving the aluminum storm frame/nailing fin. Then use a reciprocating saw with a metal blade to cut off all the nails which are nailed through the nailing fin. (use eye protection!) Once you cut all the nails, you can collapse the window in on itself by bending each side- first, pull down on the top piece, bending the middle of the top downward. Repeat this for each side until you've mangled it sufficiently to get it out.

3). remove the 4x8 pieces of siding surrounding your windows to expose the nailing fin. This is the best way, because whatever window you resinstall will need to be flashed properly behind your tarpaper / tyvek. If you remove the siding, it's much easier to do a nice job of flashing. You should never rely on caulk to flash a window. The 2nd best way is #1. But it's harder, because about all you can do is cut skinny strips of tarpaper and tuck them behind the siding on the bottom and sides (to cover the line your skilsaw cut in the membrane). The new window with nailing fin gets installed on top of these. As for the strip of tarpaper you stick underneath the tarpaper on top... it's difficult for one guy to install the window while trying to tuck the nailing fin underneath this strip of tarpaper. That's why #3 is really the best, easiest way, and results in a much better job.

Hope that helps.

window removal

most windows are installed with long roofing nails thru the nail strip. take out the glass firts. cut thru the the frame then fold the frame in inwards with a prybar use a heavy putty knife on the wall to keep from gouging the plaster/drywall. this has worked for over a dozen windows that I replaced.

good luck
