Door latch stuck
#1

I'm not quite sure how to explain this one...one of our bedroom doors is stuck closed. All the hardware is Schlage. The knob is not-keyed and is not a privacy knob, so I know it is not locked. The knob turns, but the latch does not; the mechanism inside does turn with the knob...it just doesn't move the piece (not sure what this is called) in and out of the latch to open the door. Any way to get the door open without breaking the door down?

hi
the part thats broken is the backset.
have you try with a knife to pry it open.
insert the knife blade between the door an place the blade on the backset and push it inward.
or remove the casing off the door there shouls be some space between the jam and the stude and used a bend piece or metal and try ti push the bacset out where the striker plate hole is
or remove the hinge pin of the door

Thanks for the quick reply. I did try sliding a credit card in to push the backset, but that didn't work -- the space is really tight between the door and the frame. I'll have to try taking the casing/frame off to get more room. Unfortuately, the hinges are on the other side so I can't take out the pins.

hi
remove the casing on the latch side that will give you room to pry it free
or
wait a minute
you mean the door open from the inside
then it's a sinch, remove the door stop that is on the frame surronding the door and then you can pull it toward you and place credit card between the striker and the backset and then you push the door inside
voila

Thanks again. Sometimes you just need a pro, though...it took the guy about two minutes to pop the door open with what I think was a very flexible sheet of metal. I would have done far more damage and taken much more time. The backset was busted and jammed the door. He also recommended replacing the busted Schlage with a Baldwin.
