Replacing window in cinder block wall

My bathroom has cinderblock walls - the current window is a single-pane metal-framed window that's mortared into the opening. I'd like to replace it with a less drafty modern window. Will I need to build a wooden frame inside the cinderblock opening to mount the window to, or can I tapcon the window directly into the cinderblocks?
Thanks!

Replacing window in cinder block wall

One option you may have missed would be to use glass block in the window. They also have vinyl framed vent sections that can be operated when desired. No wood and no rot. Also provide privacy and still allow light in.

You can lay the block yourself of buy panels already assembled. No wood and no rot.

If you use conventional windows and build wood bucks (frame), make sure you use pressure treated wood.

Another option is to leave the metal frame in place (assuming that it's flat on all 4 surfaces on the outside) and order a vinyl window that will fit inside it. (1/2" narrower than the frame, and 1/4" shorter.) Order the widow with the exterior trim molded to the frame (Z-bar, or whatever they call it where you are.) Cut the TRIM to a width so that the window slides into the hole and the TRIM seals to the existing metal frame. Dry fit the window. Once you are happy with the fit, then apply Dow-Corning Weatherproof Sealant to the metal frame and set the window. Use Tapcon screws (2 on each side) through the vinyl frame of the window in the concrete blocks. (Trust me, the sealant WILL hold the window in place while you install the screws!) Seal the exterior joint of the vinyl, metal and cinderblocks with the same sealant.

Thanks for the quick reply guys! I don't think I can do the metal frame method, but I had thought about glass block. I was worried about insulation - it's the coldest room in the house - does the glass block insulate well? Is it easy enough for a do-it-yourselfer to do?
Thanks again,
Blair
