Need help squaring windows.

I'm installing new vinyl windows in my home and all is going well except for squaring the windows! I can't get the window to work smoothly. I've spent over an hour shimming one window and I can't get it to work properly. I read online to use a square, but the directions were so vague, How do you use a square properly?

Is there a special trick to squaring a window?
What other tools should I use?

Thanks for the help,

A frustrated newbie

Measure the window diagonally. When both diagonals are the same, the window is square.

The easiest way is to basically square the window to itself. Close the sashes to within 1/4 " of the frame, work with it till you get the window as level as possible and the sashes parallel with eachother and the mainframe where the sashes meet it.

A couple other things, make sure the window is fairly plumb, and make sure you don't have any of the screws too tight putting too much pressure on the frame, either of these can make the window bind.

Also don't laugh too hard but a little lemony pledge on the sliding surfaces works wonders on the occasional stubborn stiff vinyl window :P
