Door Sizes?

Door Sizes?
I have a finished door opening that is 28" wide (installed by morons).
Why are there no 26" doors?
I assume I will get a 28" and trim the sides?
GRRRRRR,
Bill

Bill: You're kidding? You may have to reframe the opening and put in a 2-0 x 6-8, but that cuts your size considerably, especially if it is regularly used. Of course, the alternative option is to open it up to a 2-4 or 2-6 opening. There are people out there who can cut down frames and doors without making it look like a butcher job. Anyone can cut down a frame, but the door is another story. With the new year comes new projects. Good luck with the project.

Thanks Chandler
Can get a door for under $30 at Lowe's. I have a used 2-6 I have to cut down for a 30" opening - if I screw it up I'll just keep going to 27" and then I'll use it for something else. I have several used 2-0's but only need one right now. That would be too narrow for my 28" opening.
Don't think I'll have any problem with my new Ridgid TS. I love it.

If it's a hollow core door, there isn't much there to take off the edges without ruining the door. You need to leave enough frame for the hinge screws to bite into and enough on the latch side to secure the lockset to. I NEVER take more than 1/8" to 3/16" off either side. And if the hole for the lockset is already drilled, leave that side alone. You WON'T find a lockset with less than 2-3/8" backset.
Enlarging the rough opening so that a prehung 28" wide door will fit isn't that difficult. And framing down so a 24" PH door will fit doesn't have to be a butcher job either.

Thanks again, guys
The 30" only needs to take off about 1/2 ".
I have several 2-0 and that is probably the best (easiest for sure) solution for my 26" opening problem. I believe the Lowe's plain slab doors are not hollow core - they feel pretty heavy.
Thanks again,
Bill

I really think your best option here is to re-frame your rough opening to accomodate the size of door that you want, you'll probably regret putting in a smaller door.
