Replacement Door
I need to replace an accordian door to a basement storage area. Of course the measurements of the opening are not standard so I cannot go to my local home improvement store and buy bifolds. The opening is approximately 48" wide and 77" tall. It appears the standard for bifolds is 80" tall. I also have enough room where I could make a pocket door possibly. Any suggestions? I'm guessing that bifolds are easier to make than a pocket door. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Cutting 3 or so inches off the bottom of a bifold door doesn't end the world. I do it on almost all remodels, where there has been tile or carpet installed, and the original door won't fit anymore. How "almost" 48" is it. You can trim a little off the stiles, but I don't recommend more than a 1/4" or so, then re-radius the edge with sandpaper.

This is what I have to say.
What you do to the top, do the same to the botttom, what you do to the left, do the sme to the right. Need to take off 1"? 1/2 off the top, 1/2 off the bott. or 1/2 off left and 1/2 off right.
Chew got it?

If the apron on the bottom of the bifold is wider, and it usually is, I still recommend taking the bottom rather than the top. The header rail is quite often too thin to remove alot of material from. Take equally off the stiles.

If its a hollow door, and you take 3" off of it, you could essentially cut 1 ½ off of the top and 1 ½ off of the bottom and reinsert the stiles back into the top and bottom of the door. If I have done this once, I have done it a thousand times. But there is more han one way to skin a cat…..preferably a dead cat, because you can do without all of the scratching….. Good Luck
