Costs of New Windows
I just signed a contract to have all new windows installed in my home (24 total windows including one Sliding glass door).
Interesting thing is that we are paying for the costs of the window and my Energy company is picking up all the installation costs.
We were quoted $18,000 total for the windows. Does this sound right? This seems awful expensive for 24 windows. My neighbor was just quoted $7000 for windows and installation and he has the same amount of windows.
I am thinking we are getting the shaft.
Can anyone let me know.
Thank you.

Welcome Kevinrstruck,
As a Locksmith, I am no expert on windows but I'll give you what I know. First though, I need to know the type of window. Is there anything special about them? Hurricane windows? That sort of thing.
Also, I really cannot tell if there are any hidden problems that would increase the cost of installation without actually being there. However, that being said, it does seem high to me, but I could be wrong. What type of windows did your neighbor order?
And another factor that could bring the price up is location. Your post didn't mention where in the country/world you are.
I have a friend that had 21 windows installed for about 12,000. They were supposed to be Hurricane proof, but they sent the wrong ones, and he got a partial refund.
Realizing I didn't help much, but I wanted to offer my thoughts.

Windows vary greatly on how good they are and options ordered. low-e, argon, full screen/half screen, fiberglass screen or aluminum screen, material frame is made from, is framed colored?, glass thickness option 5/8", 3/4" , 7/8", 1", etc...
many peole I give estimates to right away bring out the "Menards" card and state we can get these windows for $100/ea. All I can say is that's like comparing a chevette to a cadillac...you cannot compare since quality is at 2 opposite ends of the spectrum, as is warranty. I priced out windows for a homie once, mendards wenco brand came in at $149 and that same window in the brand I sell was $268.
Now factor in did you deal directly with a conctractor or was there a salesman involved? Off the hip in my area for a basic no frills install I get $350-375 per opening and prices goes up with more window options like ones listed above, or if windows have grids installed, is they're casements, awnings, etc...salesmen can typoically seel those same windows as I do but get $500-700 and opening since that is their job to get the most money they can from homeowners and make the most profit since they're cut of the job is based off prfoti margin.
I dont know your states exact law, but here the customer has 3 days to legally retract a contract after signing with no reprocusions. Just know window pricing itself varies greatly per brand and per region.

I had vinyl replacement windows insalled (14 altogther) at a previous home for around $4000, however I was quoted $10,000+ for both Marvin and Pella. I think Anderson was around $8000.
It's been my experience that if you are getting standard double-hung vinyl replacement windows, then all the makes are really about the same in terms of energy efficiency and etc., so I would choose the least expensive option.

I just started replacing my double hung windows with replacement windows.
Home Depot had a price of about $200/window,
I went to a local lumber yard, price- about $325/window ($475 w/install)
I went to a Window and door store - price was $500/window ($700 w/install)
all were vinyl/2x pane/argon/low-e/6x6 grill/1/2 screen
All the windows "looked" about the same, unless you are an engineer you pretty much have to "believe" someone and in the end, go with your gut.
I decided to buy from the local lumber yard and install myself, saving the install cost. turned out install is easy, takes about an hour/window.

I had a company out here to replace my back door and also install two new storm doors. While he was here, I asked him about my windows (old wood double hung sash, 1928 bungalow) He said ballpark figure was about $500 installed each window. That is including the decorative 3 pane upper sash to make them look like the originals. Needless to say, this will wait til another day, but might give you some idea.
