Replacing Patio door
Your Question:
Replacing a sliding glass Patio door with new Vinyl dual pane sliding patio door:
exterior wall = Stucco
The contractor has completely removed the existing door and frame.
He has installed installed new door NOT like a new construction but like a retrofit.
Is this right?
Contractor is saying if he installes as a new construction then he will have cut some stucco and that will develop cracks ibn stucco and will cause leaks. Therefore the new window is installed as a retrofit.
All my freinds are saying that the new door should be installed as a new constructon because the old frame has been completely removed.
Please advise. Thanks.
sam.

If your contractor was able to remove the original door without tearing up the stucco, then installing the replacement door as a retrofit is just fine. The only thing the door has for new construction is a nailing fin, which is ideal to nail it in place with. I am assuming he will be nailing the door frame to the existing framing of the house to hold it in. He will have to install his own brick mold or other exterior molding, as well as new interior case molding to dress it up.
