Window grills

All,
I have a door/window combination that goes out to my deck. The door and windows have those grills that attach flimsily to the wood frame with pins for easy removal so you can clean the windows. Well my pins have either been painted over, are bent, are broken or missing. I'm looking for better ways to secure these grills (apx. 3' wide by 5' high) to the windows.
I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Mark

my grills fit over a window frame that only leaves a rounded over edge for the pins to stick into. I'm concerned about splitting the wood if I used nails or screws. I know I could and should pre-drill but I still think this has its risks.
