Help needed for an odd sized door opening. 34x83
We have just bought an old house and we have a finished door opening that goes into the bathroom that is 34x83. (We didn't finish it that size- someone removed the original french doors before we moved in)
This seems to be a very odd size (all doors I have been able to find online are either 32 or 36) so does anyone here have any suggestions as to what we could use to fill it? Preferably we would like a real door- but french doors would work if we could find a place to buy them.
Also if anyone has any recommendations for good places to buy doors I would really appreciate any suggestions anyone has.
Thank you very much for your time,
Miss Lacie Ann

odd size door
Actually 34 x 84 (not 83) was a common size in pre-World War II homes. And 34 x 84 is still available as a special order by MANY door manufacturers. I've probably ordered that size about 20 times over the last 25 years. Morgan, Buffelen, and Simpson are three of the many that will make that size. You'll pay a premium for it though - Normally doors are ordered in pallet quantities of 5, 10, or more of the same size/style. If you order only one there's maybe a $100-150 extra charge. Try a lumber yard, millwork specialty place, or maybe even one of the big boxes like Home Depot. As far as I know all of them can special order one. If we knew your location perhaps someone could suggest where specifically to get one.

A 34" finished opening is just about right for a 32" prehung interior door unit. Adding a 2x flat against the header will bring it down to 81 1/2", which is fine for hanging a standard unit. It will require finishing above the door, but case molding will cover the sides just fine.
Now, if you are talking about a finished cased opening, you have a different animal, and will have to locate the larger doors as mentioned, or remove the casing, reframe the opening and install a standard door unit, which would get my vote. Good luck with your search.

34" doors
I just Googled Memphis-Millwork-Doors-Wood and saw a lot of matches, including Gates Lumber Co. In Memphis. I don't know anything about them but they state they carry standard and custom wood doors. I also looked up Simpson Door Co at http://www.simpsondoor.com/support/d...er_locator.asp Enter your zip code there to be directed to a dealer near you. Good luck!
