Should I replace aluminum?

I have aluminum slider windows that are about 25 years olds. The windows are double-paned and fogging. They are also relatively large 45" x 70" as we have nice views of wooded property.

I am assuming that I should replace them. There is also rot in some of the sills and exterior trim as they did not flash and caulk properly (so I'm told).

I am relatively handy and am planning on DIYing.

My questions (there basic, sorry):
1 - Am I right in assuming that foggy and 25 means replacement?
2 - Should I replace with aluminum?
3 - Should I use new or replacement?

Thanks in advance.

You have sill damage, which can be repaired without removing the window frame in most cases. If you are concerned about the flashing and water integrity of the units, yes, I would pull them. If caulking is all that is necessary to bring them back to 100% then I would leave them in place. Contact a window glazing company and have them come out, measure, cut and install new internal glazing in the frames. They will take your frames out, install the new glazing and reinstall your windows in your frames. Quite a bit lesser expensive than removing the entire framework, which is aluminum, and has sufferred no real damage. I visited my daughter in Denver a few weeks ago, and she had suggested replacing her windows that were fogged. I had her call a glazing company, and they cut the glass, and had 4 windows done in under an hour and a half. Good luck with the project!

Thanks

Thanks Larry,

I wouldn't have thought of that. If I understand you right, I think you are right.

The aluminum frames are generally in good shape (I will double check on all of them). Windows slide well, latch well, don't feel drafty. A few sills have water damage on the inside, but might be from 20+ years of condensation on the aluminum frames. There is a decent amount of exterior trim damage that has resulted in siding rot in a few places. Relatively sure that this has nothing to do with the windows but how they were installed.

Two more question (just to prove no good deed goes unpunished):
1 - When you say flashing are you referring to flashing that is part of the window of that goes between the siding and the windows? I believe the siding to window flashing is poor in many cases

2- Can glazing companies replace double-paned? I have no idea how easy/hard that might be.

Thanks again
