Installing Patio Doors

I am considering installing Patio doors leading to a deck. There is no opening, I would have to create it. I have vinyl siding that would have to be cut through. This task is probably beyond my capabilities. Is this something I can get a handyman to help me with or should I get someone with more expertise?

Will I probably need a permit?

For someone with construction experience, preparing the opening and installing the door would be fairly easy. The vinyl siding would be removed first. It's likely that the ceiling and roof would need to be supported temporarily while the opening is cut out, and a header would be installed over the entire opening. The interior drywall would need to be patched and refinished inside. You may also have electrical wiring running through that wall that would need to be rerouted. Just a few things to consider before attempting this yourself or contacting a handyman or contractor.

Thumbs up

I just had this done. I'm having a deck built and I needed an exit to it. I purchased an Anderson Permashield slider and the guy building my deck installed. Xsleeper hit the nail on the head with everything he stated. I think anything that requires a change to the structure of the building requires a permit-check with your township. I had to get one. It also helps to have an electrician on the ready just in case. I have some wiring that needs to be rerun due to the door, plus I need a switch put next to the door for the outside lights. Also, not sure what type of door you're getting, but the Anderson is wonderful...it has a really tight seal and is quite beefy. I paid $850 from the local lumber yard for it. Its a bit pricey, but not too much more than a plain vinyl slider.

Hope this adds to the already good advice you've gotten.

All this has certainly been helpful. I have been in contact with a local handyman and he is giving me an estimate. I think it is too much to handle on my own.
