If you operate the door and bring it "almost closed" to the point where the latch almost touches the strike plate, you should be able to observe a nice even "reveal" of light between the door and the jamb.
From what you have described, it sounds like you may have a larger "reveal" of light at the top than there is at the bottom. What this would indicate is that the sides of the door are racked- in other words, they are not in the same plane. To correct this, the entire frame of the door would need to be adjusted. Often, it just means tapping one corner of the jamb in while tapping the opposite corner out. Making slight adjustments to each corner of the prehung door jamb will usually line up the legs of the jamb with one another, making the "reveal" of light along the latch side of the door perfectly straight, like it should be.
