Question Help with repairing "crank" windows

Hi,
I have a number of windows in my house that open by turning a crank. The window then swings out via an arm that travels along a track.
Several of these windows now don't work. The gears are stripped or something. I don't know who makes them so I don't know where to get replacement parts to fix them.
Does anyone know who makes these windows?
It would be great since I am tired of having to take the screens off of the opposite window and then pull the offending window in by hand.

hello, the windows your talking about are called casement windows. the only manufacturer that may be able to have the cranks are anderson and maybe others. also its a good idea to search the big box hardware stores(lowe's, home depot) for these in the window dept. be careful about what crank you buy because they are handed. before putting a crank in be sure that the window itself is free of obstructions and the track were the arm goes is clean. when putting new ones in, make sure to grease the teeth of the gears and the track were the arm slides. good luck

Andersen operators are made for Andersen windows only. If they are Andersen you will find an AW etched in the corner of the glass. Many manufacturers use Truth operators so you may want to do a search for Truth Hardware. Forget the big box stores.

true there, John I was using anderson as an example because of not knowing the manufacturer of chi's windows or operators.

Thanks for the hints

Checked all of the windows in question and finally found one that didn't have the housing painted over and it plainly says Andersen on the housing. So now at least I know who to go to to get the two or three non-functioning ones fixed. They must be really old because none of the glass has an AW etched into the glass that I can see.

your welcome, glad we were able to help you with the windows, just be careful with crank selection because they are handed. casement windows are handed almost like doors if it opens out to left, it is a left handed window if opens outwords to right, its a right handed. on the crank packaging it should say the hand of the crank. if not the best way to determine this is when holding crank as if to isntall it with gears away from you and arm is on left and crank is on right its a right hand crank. if arm on right and crank on left its a lefty.

good luck and im glad i was able to help with the problem

Hi The casement windows I worked on were handed from the view outside the building. They make all different kinds of those things I would suggest you find out how many of each hand you need then take a sample of each to a glass shop. They can put you on the right track.
Good Luck Woodbutcher
