Replacing knob latch on screen door

I do not understand what the measurements mean in the discription for the door latches. How do
I measure the jamb backset? What does "3 " hole spacing" mean? Is each of the 3 holes 1 inch apart? Can my existing hole diameter be larger than what the replacement handle says? My hole diameter is 3/4" but the replacement handle calls for 5/16".
Thanks for the help.

Smile Backset

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to to the center of the knob. Most door locks have backset of 2 3/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches.

Storm door backset is 1 1/4. Not sure about your other questions. Hopefully the instructions that came with your new storm door handle have become clear by now. They usually come with a template for drilling, but maybe yours didn't?
