I bought a house in April and I've been slowly but surely having things fixed as needed. There are gaps around the exterior doors which I can't seem to resolve with weather stripping (either that or I'm just doing it wrong) but they are pretty big gaps. I also had the seller take care of the foundation repair, but I think the interior doors were hung when the foundation was already out of whack, so now they don't close properly.

What type of place would I call for assistance? When I look in the yellow pages under doors, it's just mainly garage door and lumber companies.

Thoughts?

 

A finish or trim carpenter would be able to do the job. A handyman might be able to do it [probably cheaper]

 

I am no caroenter or handy man, but I was suprised how easy it was to install (and then correct, several times in some cases) interior doors. Just get the side with the hinges right and all the others are easy, regardless of the number of times needed to get it right. that's what caulk is for. TomC

 

Before hiring someone, it might be worthwhile to take the trim off the area surrounding the door, and take a look at the rough opening.

If it's not too crooked, it might be a simple job to take apart the frame and reinstall it plumb and level. Should (theoretically) solve your problems.

One thing I would check first is to see if your doors have been trimmed at all to fit the openings. If so, they are no longer square, and won't fit a square opening...

 

Good point!!

You can take a square and place it on the corners of the door if you have any trouble telling by just looking. If you don't have a square, most any object that you know to be square can be used instead - providing it's portable

 

You'd be surprised what some of the new forms of weather stripping can do. Door gasket pressed against the door from the outside , plus a vinyl bead running between the door and the mortise.
