We just bought (2) 32" Bi-Fold (panel?) doors to go across a 64" opening from our living area into our kitchen area.
We didn't pay attention (kind of a spur of the moment purchase at HD) to the height of the opening which is 97". The height of the doors are 80".
Would it be possible to run a 2X4 across the top of the doors to mount the rail for the doors? The doors aren't very heavy at all.
Looks as though there are studs on both walls where the doors need to be. Just run screws at an angle through the 2X4 into the wall?
Are there any better suggestions?
Thanks...
Chuck

Yes you can fill it in with a 2X4 across that 64" opening. but you still want to put short 2X to fill in that 15 1/2"? above it about 16 on center. Id also put one on each wall as you call it. that will let you nail the cross over 2X to better nail to it

Errrrrr.... I was afraid of that.
In otherwords, I would be better off just framing it in and finishing it? I was hoping to be able to run the 2X4 straight across and paint it and hope that wouldn't be too noticable.
We are in a rent house and I don't want to go to too much time and expense, but at the same time, I want it done right and will do whatever it takes to do it right. I have a fantastic landlord and don't want to mess him around.
Well, sounds like it will be a little project to take care of in the next couple of weeks...
Thanks for the advice.

Doors
The weight of bifold doors rests on the floor. Your 2x4 idea will work if you will close in the area above it with a piece of thin plywood. Nail the plywood on the ouside of the 2x4 to give a finished look. Nail cleats on the inside of the two sides and top of the space above the door to secure the ends and top of the plywood. The plywood will support the center of the 2x4 to keep it from sagging in the middle. If you want to use screws, then undoing the whole project back to the original opening would be simple to do.
