Hanging Doors

I am planning to install a 36" prehung door in my basement. I wanted to know the minimum width the framed opening needs to be. Thanks in advance.

General rule is 2" wider and 2" higher than the door size. You will have to shim a little, but allowing that much will also let you correct its position if the opening is not exactly square.

Cold air coming from underneath window shade

When the nights get colder you can feel the cold air coming from underneath and out the sides of the window shade. The house was built in 1999 and the windows are decent windows. The builder said that would happen because the cold air would get trapped in between the window and shade. So it's not a big deal but now my son moved into a toddler bed that is underneath the window (huge race car bed and that's the only place it would fit) and when I was laying in his bed I could feel a slight draft of cold on my face. Not like there is a fan blowing on you just that you can feel the temperature difference. Is there a way I can alleviate this problem in that one window?Read More

Lock idea needed (For Garage Windows)

I need suggestions for my garage windows in case power goes out and i can't get inside my garage. I do not have a side door. Remote control garage door is only way in. Windows open from "inside" the garage. Is there something I can do so i am able to lock/open windows from outside but concealed from anyone knowing this? Some kind of lock or ???
