Measuring a Rough Opening

I have some 50 year old casement windows that I want to replace with new energy efficient models. How do I measure for the rough opening?

It's a little hard to explain how to measure, because there are so many variables- most depend on exactly what type of window you currently have. It's usually something that an experienced installer and/or salesman has to actually SEE in order to know where to measure. I doubt I can describe it unless you can provide some closeup pictures of the windows in question, inside and out.

Exterior door shortening

One of the previous owners of my house put on an addition, and used an interior door as an exterior door. I'm not sure how square the frame will be, etc (it currently measures 32" by 78" - some has been cut off the bottom due to rotting). It also opens to the outside (which stinks when there is a pile of snow on the porch). The only way I can think to get an exterior type door on there is to buy a solid wood door, and trim it until it fits. How hard is it to hang a new door to open the other way? Does anyone know if I am likely to be able to put in a new frame and door? Are there metal doors that can be adjusted? thanksRead More

Screwed up my solid wood, six panel door

But to my defense I didn't know the door was not made from real wood. Actually it is made from real wood, just man made lengths. What happened was I bought a 42" six panel pine pocket door and frame from a door company. Not a cheap door, either as I was told it had to be a 1 3/4" door to resist warping due to the size, and the frame was a heavy duty frame. However, the opening I wanted to put it in is actually 40". I didn't think it would be a problem as I would just rip the stiles down equally to fit the opening...which I did. It went perfectly and the door fit great, but as I was sanding the edges to remove the saw tooth marks I noticed the stiles are made from fingerjointed wood, and as my luck would have it I am staining this door. Man, was I upset when I found this out. So now I am searching for 2" pine edgebanding to glue onto the edge, but I am having difficulty finding it. I've found some 2" white birch but I'm not sure if that would stain ok to match the rest of the door. Can anyone tell me tell me if it will work OK, or any other options? Thanks...RandyRead More
