replace w/ glass block or vinyl?

putting home on the market and i need to replace basement windows. the windows now are the old metal frames and they are very rusted. vinyl windows can be had at the box store for about $60. i have 6 windows to replace all together.

I did not price out the block windows. I have someone who can install them.

just looking for opinions. not sure what to do. not sure which would be easier and look better. i wouldn't care if they were block or vinyl. i think thats why i cant decide what others would want.

mostly though, which is easier????

thanks

Most big box vinyl windows are standard sizes and often do not properly fit existing basement windows. You need custom sizes. Glass block units can be ordered to fit(more or less), but both need a bit of work to fit properly. I often use the frame as my stop for new vinyl windows, if the frame is not too bad. If the steel frame is shot, you will have to chip out the mortar holding it in place, then your opening size changes, so measure carefully. I hope this makes some sense, difficult to explain in a short message.

thanks! it actually makes sense to me.

i've considered having these profesionally done. i get a coupon book every so often that has a company in it that will 3 glass block (basement) windows for $395 installed. I'll have to look into it some more and see whta the deal is.

I dont think the windows is something i can do on my own.

thanks again.

anyone got and input on which looks more appealing???

As long as you don't have to conform to egress window code, the block window allows light in, occludes vision into your room and is relatively weather proof. Here, again, it will depend on your window opening size as to whether the blocks will fit. Regular windows will probably have to be custom built to fit the openings.
I prefer the blocks, but consider ventilation as well. You can't open blocks.
