Patio Doors

My House Is U Shaped. It Has 6 Patio Doors Facing The Courtyard. They Are Old Have Air Bubbles Between The Glass And I Need Ideas On How Or What I Can Do To Get Rid Of These Doors. I Dont Really Need 6 Entrances To My House.

 

You can always frame in the openings and install drywall and siding, but I suspect they were originally for a view. Is there still a view?? If yes, consider replacing the doors with modern energy efficient units.

 

Likewise, I cannot see the attraction for all those sliding doors. A view is a view, and you can see everything from 2' off the floor up, so why not windows, even fixed pane windows. In addition, if you move them over 18" from the floor, they don't have to be tempered glass, which is a huge savings. You may want to consider removing all but one for ingress and egress, frame up the remainder and install nice large windows for the view. I would also consider installing either french doors, or inwardly opening doors, rather than a slider.

 

In Florida and some surrounding coastal states, its very common to run into installations where we pull anywhere from 6 to 12 old single pane alum sliders and retro new Andersens in, or vinyl replacement impact resistant sliders. The reason most places down here have so many sliders or dbl or triple hinged is because most have Lanai's, courtyards, or Pools, with each main room having access to the area giving the entire house an open feel.

I just recently tore out 10 old alum sliders, a wood entry, and 1 Picture and installed 10 Frenchwood Gliders in there place and a Fenchwood entry, and a casement.

Not sure of your area your at, but down here, having openings like that is a key selling point and add's value to the house. Maybe different elsewhere, but in Florida, its all to common to find this.

 

Our openings generally lead to a vertical drop of about 14', so the more openings for foot traffic, the less attractive they are. I have been installing 6x6 sliding windows on the view side of a few homes lately, and the customers really like it because it gives them the view of the mountains they want with a little less cost (no tempered glass), and the can have electrical service along the wall for small tables, etc. I guess different strokes......
