Replace rim lockset w/standard 1 1/8" door?

Tired of trying to repair the rim lockset - it's one lousy L shaped piece of metal and I can't get it positioned right to operate the latch....

The door is 1 1/8" thick. Will standard (normal) type lockset work on this door?

Believe it or not if standard won't work it'll be cheaper to special order hollow door then buy good quality rim lockset. (Because of course the door is not standard dimension)

Change the door to 1-3/8.

A mortice lock solution exists but it's not inexpensive.
Installation is more difficult than a rim lock.
The existing door may not be suited for a mortice lock.

No. But the more modern rimlock sets seem to be more user friendly. I have to install 4 of them on an 1850 log cabin tomorrow on doors that I built from scratch. The owner wanted as original design as possible. So I checked out the newer ones and they seem to operate more smoothly.
