need to install 36" exterior door in basement

I currently have a 30" metal exterior door through a block wall in my basement.

I cannot bring a large couch through the 30" door, so I need to remove it and install a 36" door in the same location. Do I rent a cut off saw with a carbide wheel and start cutting the block to make a R/O for the new door? It would be quicker than using a hammer and chisel.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks, JB

Start by consulting a structural engineer. Feasibility: load above, support below, lintel size, anything else.
Hire a masonry contractor to redo the opening following the engineers direction.
Install frame & door.

My money would be on a smaller couch or none at all.

This is a big undertaking!!! You can't just enlarge the opening!

You need the help/advice of an engineer or someone qualified with construction expeirence.

There is a header above the door opening. The header supports the load that would otherwise be supported by a solid wall. Each end of the header is supported by the wall on each side of the opening. You would need to temporaily support the structure above the basement, and install and support a longer header. NO SIMPLE JOB!!

Thanks for your reply guys. The door is located on the end wall of the house and is about 15 feet away from the main girder running the entire length of the house which is 70-80 years old. I don't want any problems, so I will get in a structural eng. to inspect. Thank you, JB
