I assume you are talking about the area around the latch?? If the whole width of the jamb is damaged and/or split, it is better to replace the jamb. But if the damge is not too bad, cut out the damage and make a same size piece to fit the cutout. Sounds simple, but it is mostly trial/error type thing with lots of trimming and fitting.

I am referring to the area behind the hinge actually, Does that matter? Should I gorilla glue it or Liquid nails? I work a a site that does insurance claims so we dont have the luxury of replacing jambs when they need it. Thanx!

That type of repair is reffered to as a dutchman.

Bill gave you the basics for making the repair. Done right the repair can be almost invisible, done poorly

Talking That was close!

I must have misheard my friend. I thought he said we were going to dutch the doors. oh well. It didnt matter the ex-residenets decided that door jambs are far too over rated so they used 2x4's with 1/4 round for casing! needless to say we just demoed them instaed of "fixing" them! thanx for the help anyways!

What is the specific problem?? Behind the hinge suggests to me that the screws no longer hold. That is an easy fix. Quick fix, glue some toothpicks or wood matches in the holes. Proper fix, replace the screws with longer screws that go into the house framing, but don't overtighten. If the jamb is cracked or rotted in the hinge area, you may be better of replacing the jamb.
