No framed door installation

No framed door installation

I am the owner of a modular home, so the doors are uniquely sized.. steel door 31 3/4 x 73 1/2 and the storm door is 32 x 75. The doors are currently incased in a particle type board frame. my DARLING sister found a clearance door at Lowes and bought it for me....its a 690.00 door that she bought for 35.00...thats right!! 35.00... The door is 32 X 79....No problem, we are cutting it down...(my darling brother has cut 100's of steel doors down in his old job).. I would love to keep it at the original size... but not enough clearance above the door.... I haven't put a framed a door since the 70's and that was with my dad... Is there a way to have the door framed??? And if so, where.....

You may have to spend the remaining money you saved, but most any millwork will custom make a frame and install your door in it.

Double Hung Air Infiltration

I have several new vinyl double hung windows on my house. With 1 of these windows, I am experiencing air infiltration during high wind loads (25-30 mph or more). The installer was back to recheck the installation, and the window manufacturer rep upgraded the pile weatherstrip on the sides of the sashes to a thicker size (depth). The upgrade did make a difference, but I can still feel a cold draft along the edge where the meeting rail and frame meet under high wind loads. This window is on the 2nd story of the house, and is the only window facing due west. The area west of my house is flat open land (at least 2-3 miles), so there is no wind break. When the wind is blowing west, this window gets hit hard and head-on. I am in the process of planting evergreens for a windbreak, but this will still take several years to grow high enough to make any impact. Any suggestions on what I can do, or is this just one of the drawbacks of owning a double hung window. I know that they are the "weakest" of all windows as far as air leaks, etc.

Doorknob dilemna

Hey everybody. I have a bit of a doorknob dilemna. I'm in a rental with some very old doorknobs - brass, I guess. I've taken apart several to adjust them. I'm not good on the terminology, but here's where I'm at. The doorknob to the hall closet broke. The door is currently shut, and I'd like to get inside, as the Santa Ana winds are blowing and the girlfriend's allergies are acting up. Something that I can't see or get at is broken in there. The doorknobs are off. I'm left looking at a round hole in the door. Inside the round hole is a round piece of hardware with a square hole in it. Turning that piece doesn't do anything, though there is more resistance from time to time as I rotate it. The piece seems to have a lot of mobility as well - meaning, it moves from front to back pretty easily. I can't get at the other side of the door, as it is latched. The hinges on the door are also old, so it is impossible to get the door off by removing it from the hinges without damaging the wood. I know I need to get a new knob, but I'm just trying to get access to the closet now without causing too much damage. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
