Widening exterior door

I recently bought retrofit vinyl windows and a sliding patio door. My installer did a great job on the windows but he mis-measured the door opening by 8". The door was expensive and can't be returned so I want to widen the opening.

I'm concerned about the solution proposed by the installer. Instead of replacing the header, he wants to extend it by nailing sections of 2x4 to it. The new 2x4 end would then be supported by the new trimmer stud.

Is it safe to extend a header like this? Will it meet building codes?

Absolutely NOT!!!

Either they can do it the right way by replacing the header, or they can order you the right door. It's not your fault they screwed up so you don't have to pay any extra, and you should not let them cut corners just to cover their behind.

What sleeper said. They must do it right or not at all. Otherwise you will be fighting sagging drywall, cracks, door sticking, etc., sometime in the future. What they propose might work in a ranch(no 2nd story) that is a non supporting wall, but I would not recommend it.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely do this right or, if I can sell the door, not at all.

My house is a single story ranch, but I still don't want to chance it. Especially since I don't know if it would meet code, if my insurance would cover me if something else went wrong, and if it would hold up in an earthquake (I live in southern California.)
