Changing Door Lock
Hello,
I have a deadbolt lock on my entrance door that I want to replace, however I am having a hard time finding the similar size ( 1 3/4 inch in diameter) at Home Depot and Lowe's. Will a bigger (2"+) work?

Deadbolt Lock
What size hole do you have in the door where the old deadbolt was removed?
Compare this to the size hole reqiured for the new lock.

The current standard is 2 1/8" hole. If your is smaller, hole saws are available, but you need to make a simple guide to open the existing hole. Don't try to freehand it, you could ruin the door. Drill a 2 1/8" hole in a piece of plywood, center that on the existing hole and clamp, then drill thru the plywood hole. Normal set back is 2 3/8 or 2/3/4, so make sure what you have. Most latches are adjustable for both.

When I did this a few years ago I bought a drill press adapter for my standard drill so that once I measured where I needed to center the new hole over the old , the drilling was true. It worked quite well.
