average cost of adding window or door to basement

I have a question. I have a 1962 full brick split-level house with a full finished basement. I would like to add one large window, or a row of french doors to the front or back side of the basement den, because there are none. Behind the wall is the grey concrete block. I would like to know if there is an average cost of doing this so I can at least determine if it is worth the research. Can someone please help???

On your split level house, what is the grade of the soil where the door would theoretically go? Is there brick in the area where the door would need to go? Both these things would dramatically affect the estimate, as well as the quality of the door. Just thinking about the door, you could get a $500 door, or a $5000 door, depending on what kind of door you want. Makes it kind of hard to estimate, doesn't it? You see what I'm getting at.

It's pretty hard to even guess without being able to see the area in question and whether it would need to be excavated or not. Plus, landscaping is often needed, which is a totally seperate estimate. If possible, digital pics of the area in question could be uploaded to a filesharing website like photobucket or flickr, then the link to the pics can be posted here. We'll take a look and see if we can help. There's a lot of knowledgable ppl here willing to lend a hand.
