The tension cord broke that controls the drape. Can this be repaired or do I need to purchase a new rod? It is a rod my Dad installed at my Mom's house and I have no experience with this. It would be less stressful for all if can be repaired, I just have no idea how to do it!

Yes!
This is a neat little project for you. I have done this many times. Of course it is better to remove the drape and take down the traverse rod so you can see everything and work with it.
If you just watch carefully, the logic of the design becomes apparent--one end of the cord is knotted and attached to the slider, then it all loops around wheels at the ends of the rod and an extra portio hangs down to create the place where you pull to open and close it.
I suggest you leave the cord in as you string a new one, then duplicate what you see. You can buy the cord in fabric/curtain/drapery departments; you might find that just the end knot is broken and you don't even have to replace the cord!
