Rusty door

I have a steel clad exterior door that is beginning to show some rust. I removed the door and sanded it down to the bare metal and then I applied a conversion coating to convert the rust into a paintable surface. Now, I have a door with these black spots, but the instructions for the conversion coating don't state what to apply next.

Should I go back with a regular gray auto primer, or would an oil based Kills primer be better in this situation? Not sure what to do next.

Thanks...Randy

Randy: I would opt for either red oxide primer or the gray stuff. Spray is better than brushing, for this area as well as the entire door. The converter basically killed the rust from growing, and the black stuff is what is left over. Sand it very lightly over the area where you use the converter. If you note it has a polyurethane like feel to it and needs a little roughing up immediately before the primer.
