Certainteed J-channels & Drip Cap
This is in regards to same project that I just posted on but I thought it was better to start a new thread. Note again that I am an absolute novice in this area.
In this case I could just go ask Certainteed but I seem to get better, fuller info from the people at this DIY forum and I think the question is more generic than specific to this manufacturer but I'll let you be the judge.
QUESTION 1:
In their instructions (

) it says "... For New Castle XT with an integral J-channel, the Jchannel leg must be removed before installation in all brick applications... "
It's a stud wall not brick. Does this still apply? To be honest I dont get what a J channel is anyway.
It also says "For New Castle XT only (which is what we are using), use a J-channel pocket cover before installation of the window instead of removing the J-channel leg. Snap the pocket cover into place over the J-channel pocket at the head, sill and jambs"
Is this brick only too or?
QUESTION 2:
Drip cap. Same windows. When does this need to be installed onto the mulled frame? It seems to imply that this can be done on the shop floor before the window is hung into the RO. Is this right? If that is the case how I dont see how both the drip cap and the top flange are both accessable. Seems like one would have to hang the window THEN put up this drip cap.

New Castle are new construction windows that come with a built in J channel. The J channel is for installing siding. If you have brick, you are not doing siding so no need for the 'J'. But you still need the nailing fin, which secures the window to the house framing. The window goes in after housewrap. You then flash under the bottom fin with felt or other flashing material(caulk under the nailing fin and under the flashing). Next, cover the side fin out to about 6-9", then cover the top fin. Top flashing(aluminum is best) goes over the nailing fin and under the housewrap, which requires that you make a cut in the house wrap.
From inside, fill the air space between the window and house framing with non expanding foam(DAP is my choice).

That certainly does makes sense. It's really the comments about brick and getting rid of the J channel that threw me. THanks again.
