wood putty around new windows
Hi, I'm new here and have a question. I just got all the lower level windows replaced in my house, because the sills were starting to rot-been here a year and knew that when we bought. The wood siding around the windows has some rot that I'm hoping to seal with wood putty until we reside. should I put a thin piece of cardboard next to the vinyl window frames so I don't get putty on them? I was thinking it would be easier to remove it when I get the siding done, and I can use some caulk at that edge when it dries.

I have some elmers wood filler, and I removed the rotted wood until I ran into solid wood. I went ahead and used it, because winter's coming! There was some rot behind it (I'll get to deal with that later), so I removed what I could and nailed some plywood behind the hole and then filled it. There is some tar like sealant on the underside of the bottom of the siding-should I remove that so any moisture can get out and not rot things more? The previous owners half-s'd everything it seems, and paid more attention to the inside than the outside.
Thanks for your help,
Steph

Could the tar like substance be the tar paper? Or is it a crack that has been caulked? Usually the bottom of the lap siding isn't [shouldn't be] caulked but they might have been trying to stop an air infiltration problem.
