doorknobs I bought don't fit...help!

I tried replacing the doorknobs on my interior doors--I'm guessing they haven't been replaced since the 70s.

The problem is the holes on my existing doors are only 1 5/8" diameter instead of 2 1/8"--which most new interior doorknobs seem to require. I tried to cut the old hole to 2 1/8" but ended up chewing up the wood on the door. So does anyone have any suggestions?

FYI - the backset on this door is 2 3/8".

Take a piece of wood (like a 1x4) and clamp it to the door, covering up your current hole. Then using a hole saw and mandrel, drill your new hole through that piece of wood. It will act like a guide to keep the hole saw drilling straight through the door. All you have to do is make sure you center the pilot hole on your 2 3/8 backset and hit the center of the bore for the plunger.

thanks for the advice....i imagine it would be tricky to get the hole centered...but much better than chewing up another door.

Great advice....
