I have a 2in. gap between the door- location near the knob. I purchashed a package of shims; how and where do I insert them?

A 2 inch gap around the door frame on the latch side? You'd want to fill the rough opening out with a 2x4 first. That would reduce the gap to 1/2", which is small enough to shim.

To shim, you usually will stick the thick side of the shim in first... then stick another shim in narrow end first. But it works best with smaller gaps. Not 2" wide ones!
