Utility/Laundry Room Door

Need to replace my utility/laundry room door - do I have to use a louvered door or can it be any interior door - the previous home owners had regular door there but the door is about 4 inches short at the bottom and about 2 inches short from the top - was this done for ventilation or were they just being tacky? (this door is visible from my family room area)

If this utility room houses Gas appliances you will want ventilation for compustible air so that these appliances can work effeciently. The louvered door would work nicely, or you could use a flat door and add vents in the walls for ventilation.
