Replacing windows: pulley cavity insulation - remove weights or can they be left

I am replacing my existing windows with an insert type replacement. The existing weight and pulley system will be insulated during the process.

Question is, should the weights in the cavities be removed first, or can I just insulate around them (going to use a low expanding foam)?

Removing the weights would involve cutting into the frame, which could subject the structure to some chance of cracking, etc. Is there an advantage to removing the weights (e.g. insulation effectiveness) that makes it worthwhile?

Thanks

Removing the weights shouldn't require any sawing into the frame. The face of the casing should have a removable panel where the weights can be removed. But I would remove them anyway in order to get complete insulation value. And if the panel comes off to remove the weights, you could use the minimally expanding foam, or use fiberglas insulation to fill the void. Just don't overpack it as insulation loses its ability to insulate the more it is compressed.

When you remove the lower sash you then remove the parting strip (the 1/2" X 3/4" strip that separates the sashes)
then remove the top sash. You should see a screw or nail in the track for the lower sash that holds the pocket for removing the the weights. I agree with chandler, remove the weights.
