Exclamation Installing French doors

We are wanting to turn our garage into our living room and our living room into the dining room (it's a very small house). The wall that connects the living room to the garage is a support wall. How far away does each beam, from the wall, have to be from each other in order for us to safely install a door? When the wall is removed you can see that some of the wall beams are doubled 2x4's and some are just one set of 2x4's. Is it safe to say that I can removed the single 2x'4s but not the doubled 2x4's?

Welcome to the forums! You will need to install a header above where your door will go. I would try to situate the door to where the hinge side was adjacent to one of the double studs you see. The reason is they are probably holding up one half of the bottom plate each. This header takes the weight above it and transfers it to the ground via the king studs on either side of it, allowing you to put in a door without it falling down. For a 36" door, you would build a header 41" long from two 2x12's with a sandwich meat of 1/2" plywood or osb. You would probably have to remove two studs, install one at 41" from the other one, install 81" jack studs inside the door way studs. Sit your header on top of the jack studs and fasten it all together with nails. Above the header, follow through with cripple studs in the same 16"oc configuration as the remainder of the wall, as well as one on the inside of each stud, directly over the jack studs. Confused, now? If so, it would probably help to see in in action, so you could purchase a good book on framing from one of the big box stores that will give you a pictoral. We are here to help, by all means, so let us know if you get stumped. Edit: Ouch! I just re-read your post. You are wanting to install french doors. Your header will be 77" wide.
