restoring finish on front door
My front door faces the south and is in need of work. I was told that I might be able to clean it and apply 3 coats of spar varnish. It has become faded from the sun. I have cleaned the door as was recommended with Krud Kutter but now it has areas where it looks like the stain is really light. So do I need to restain the door and if so, what is involved? I am a single woman but have some prior experience with home improvements. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!
It can be a difficult task to restore a door that has weathered in the sun for too long. Sand the door [always sand with the direction of the grain] and see how it looks. You may need to restain all or part of the door. If the wood still has a gray look to it - stain won't restore it back to original.

The door doesn't look gray, just mottled brown so after I sand it can I apply the stain and then the spar varnish? How long should I wait after I apply the stain before I apply the varnish? Thank you for your help!
