I am having a problem with the door going from my house to the garage. The locking mechanism is stuck and broken and the door won't open. So I want to remove the hinges while it is closed in order to get the door open and be able to work on the door handle. How do I remove the spring hinges? They aren't like typical hinges where you just push the pin up and out.

Wrong approach. Using a hacksaw or saw zaw cut the lock knob or lever off. Then drive out the other side with a hammer & drift and use a screwdriver or similar tool to operate the latchbolt.
Attempting removal of spring hinges in the closed position is foolish. It's a good way to hurt yourself or someone else. They are installed or removed in the open position with spring tension at a low level and the adjusting nut or screw locked in position.

Release the tension on the hinge first, probably by using a screw driver and allen wrench. Then unscrew the handleset as grob62 suggests. You will destroy alot less than with a hacksaw and hammer.
