Luan Door Refinishing

You all, am I sure will think I have lost my mind.. BUT.... My house was built in 1973....My parent's were the FIRST owners of the house.. My hubby and I have owned it now for about 10yrs....

Since the house has sentimental value.. as well as a touch of monetary value to me especially.... I want to keep the doors...

Here's the problem.... they are all DARK hollow core luan.... I have thus far, pulled off all the trim... sanded beautifully.. and ready to finish in a light pecan.... BUT the DOOR is making me completly NUTZ!!!! I have been sanding now for 3 days straight... at least 6 hours.. and I STILL have some area's that are VERY dark... I asked my sister who does a TON of refinishing.. she said to try paint thinner or laquer thinner see if that would lighten the spots... NOPE..... my arms are REALLY getting sore.. I have 8 more doors to go beside the one I am sanding on now....

ANY idea's on how to get the darker area's lightened??? I was wondering about maybe trying some bleach.... or do I just keep sanding away...... so far the door itself dosen't seem to have any problems with sanding I've done... and YES I am doing the back of the door first.. that way .. no one will see it but me if it's terrible....

HELP!!!!
and thanks in advance....

Welcome to the forums!

Generally a stripper is used to remove the finish and then the doors are sanded. Luan doors are fairly inexpensive and because of the color variances in the wood - they don't always stain well with light colors.

I'd replace the doors unless you either intend to either keep that color stain or change to paint.
