Question New exterior mahogany door...

Getting ready to replace enterance door to house. Going to use a mahogany, two panel slab. What I need to know is what is the best product to use to protect the door. Was looking at staying with the natural wood look, so some type of varnish would work. However, what type is the best for protection from weather?

Thanks,

My choice would be an oil based marine polyurethane(has UV blockers that regular poly's do not). Several coats with the first being thinned lightly. Sand lightly between coats. The finish will darken the wood quite a bit, so staining may not be needed, but that is a personal choice. If this gets direct weather, you will need to add a touch up coat every few years.

Use minwax helmans spar urathane or equivalant. 3 coats

Don't forget to seal the top and bottom edge!

Actually using both works best

A brush will work the material into all the cracks and crevices better than spray will but spraying is easier to eliminate any runs in the panels or lap marks. Ideally you would brush the 1st two coats and spray the last. Don't forget to sand [and dust] lightly between coats.
